The moment our testers applied DXB, the reaction was consistent — this is the one. The opening burst of Italian citrus and bergamot is almost indistinguishable from Afternoon Swim's signature freshness, but where the original begins to fade after two to three hours, DXB holds. Our testers reported an average of 9 hours of noticeable wear, with several noting the scent was still detectable on clothing the following morning.
What sets DXB apart isn't just longevity — it's the dry-down. Where many citrus alternatives turn synthetic or flat after the top notes dissipate, DXB transitions into a warm amber base that feels genuinely luxurious. Crafted by Belen Garcia, a master perfumer whose ongoing clients include Dior and Chanel, the quality of the composition is evident from first spray to final hour. At £36 for 100ml versus £265 for the original, this isn't a compromise. It's a better version of the experience.
A genuinely impressive alternative from New York-based Montagne. The opening is bright and photorealistic — mandarin orange and bergamot that sits very close to the original. Where it falls short is longevity. Our testers averaged 5–6 hours before significant fading, and the dry-down loses some of the warmth that makes Afternoon Swim memorable. At around £40, it sits close to DXB in price but behind it in performance.
Jean Lowe Azure captures the general direction of Afternoon Swim without nailing the specifics. The citrus opening is pleasant but slightly more generic — less of the distinctive juicy mandarin quality of the original. Longevity was respectable at around 7 hours, and projection is solid. A decent option if DXB is out of stock, but it doesn't match the scent accuracy of the top two.
